Round Table Discussion 2
Research with Human Beings - Round Table Discussion organized by the Swiss Society of Psychology
Host
Alexander Grob (University of Basel)
Chair
Iwan Rickenbacher (University of Berne)
At its biannual conference the Swiss Society of Psychology is organizing an interdisciplinary round table discussion on ethical standards for research with human beings. Representatives from several key institutions will present their perspectives, i.e., the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (member of the Swiss Academy of Arts and Sciences), the Federal Office of Public Health (Federal Department of Home Affairs), the Swiss Society of Psychology, and the Institute of Applied Ethics and Ethics in Medicine (University of Basel). The presentations by these representatives will be followed by both a round table discussion and a public discussion. The discussion is virulent as the Swiss Federal Law does not currently legislate regulations on research in human beings. In addition, if cantonal regulations exist at all, they show a great hetereogenity. Furthermore, respective cantonal ethic commissions act from different legal bases. Currently, there is a nation wide constructive debate on a new paragraph in the Swiss Federal Constitution on research with human beings and a legislation initiative of research with human beings. The round table discussion is intended to contributing to further clarification of ethical issues concerning research with human beings in psychology from an interdisciplinary perspective.
